Purpose/Overall Goal:

This course provides nurses and other healthcare personnel with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement appropriate alternatives to traditional physical and chemical restraints and physical seclusion.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify and comply with the latest government standards and guidelines regarding the use of physical and chemical restraints and seclusion.
  • Understand the nature and importance of various alternatives.
  • Perform assessment and care planning tasks as part of the patient's healthcare team.
  • Identify and implement appropriate measures as alternatives to the use of restraints and seclusion, including modifying both the patient environment and delivery of care.
  • Properly utilize restraints and seclusion as a last-resort solution when necessary.
