Description:
Medical errors have recently been recognized as a significant cause of thousands of unnecessary injuries and deaths in the United States. As part of the general response aimed at reducing medical errors, patient safety has taken on a more critical role. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has developed a new patient safety initiative to address some of these problems. This program looks at this initiative and describes what steps nurses can take to help ensure patient safety.

In this course, you will review the seven safety goals that have been identified for implementation by 2004, plus the 13 measures that will be required to meet these goals. The course will also discuss a sample model of a patient safety plan that the Commission has suggested for every institution, including a discussion of its structure and tasks.

Purpose/Overall Goal:

The goal of this program is to define and discuss the JCAHO patient safety initiative, including the problems and concerns that have led to its implementation.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the concerns and problems that led to development of the JCAHO patient safety initiative, as well as the goals that will be accomplished through it.
  • Identify the seven major patient safety goals and why they have been selected for immediate implementation.
  • Understand and implement 13 key safety measures developed to accomplish the seven patient safety goals.
  • Understand and implement a patient safety program at your institution; with a strong focus on patient communications, staff education and specific safety improvement activities.
This course will take approximately 90 minutes to complete and comes with 0.0 CEU credits.
